Peas benefit concert raised more than $1 million for North Dakota flood recovery efforts.

<P>It's been a summer of devastating flooding in the Midwest and northeast and two bands are doing their part to help victims of the storms clean up. Officials said on Wednesday (September 7) that the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/black_eyed_peas/artist.jhtml">Black Eyed Peas</a> raised at least $1.3 million to help flood recovery efforts in the North Dakota town of Minot with a concert Saturday at the North Dakota State Fair Grandstand.</P><P>According to the <a href="http://yhoo.it/pWJ3zi" target="_blank"><I>Associated Press</I></a>, the group drew nearly 16,000 fans to the show, which featured an appearance from actor and Minot native Josh Duhamel, who is married to BEP singer Fergie. Nearly one-fourth of the city's residents were evacuated earlier this summer when the Souris River flooded the town.</P><P>Meanwhile, jam band godheads <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/phish/artist.jhtml">Phish</a> plan to perform their first show in their home state of Vermont since 2004 in order to help victims of Tropical Storm Irene. The show will take place on September 14 at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction, with tickets going on sale on Saturday.</P><P>The group, which formed in Vermont 28 years ago, said in a statement that the devastation in the region from the storm had a profound effect on them. "It's been heartbreaking to see all the loss and destruction that came from the storm," <a href="http://phish.com/#/news/2011/06/phish-a-benefit-for-vermont-flood-recovery-september-14th" target="_blank">said</a> Phish keyboardist Page McConnell. "Vermont is very much a part of who we are as a band. We're really looking forward to playing this show and we hope the money raised will make a difference in the recovery and rebuilding effort."</P><P>Tickets will be $75, and proceeds from the show and merchandise sales will go to the band's WaterWheel Foundation and the Vermont Community Foundation to aid in recovery from the flooding caused by the storm.</p>

Pop singer sings 'Don't Think Twice, It's All Right' for Amnesty International anniversary album.

<P>It's hard to associate <a href="/music/artist/_kesha_/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a> with songs about anything other than hot guys, body glitter and partying. But she's defying her usual topics of interest for human rights organization Amnesty International. The singer is one of the many musicians on the org's <i>Chimes of Freedom</i> compilation of Bob Dylan's music, out January 24.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Ke$ha Calls Bob Dylan Cover Choice 'An Accident'" id="vid:720838" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>When MTV News spoke with K-Dollar Sign last week about her <a href="/news/articles/1676172/kesha-sleazy-remix.jhtml">all-star remix of "Sleazy,"</a> she also opened up about switching gears vocally and emotionally for her version of Dylan's classic "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right."</P><P>"I mean, I think it's pretty well known that he's one of, if not my most, favorite artists of all time and ... one of the most amazing lyricists as well — the original storyteller," she explained. "So I love Bob Dylan and this was just, like, a dream. When they asked me to do a cover, I was just, like, salivating and going through all my records. It was so fun. It was the best homework assignment you could possibly have."</P><P>K's version of Dylan's song is a slow-burning, heartbreaking ode to the already heartbreaking classic, where she channels Dylan through lyrics like "Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say/ To try and make me change my mind and stay/ We never did too much talkin' anyway/ So don't think twice, it's all right."</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="What Is The Biggest Perk Of Being A Headliner?" id="vid:642810" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>Ke$ha had originally intended to record another Dylan track, but when she heard that someone else had their sights set on it, she settled on "Don't Think Twice," prompting a catharsis she could never have imagined.</P><P>"This song was kind of an accident. I sat down and this is the first take that I ever sang," she recalled. "I just sat down on my bed for the first time after months of being on tour and I just started crying, and it was kind of like an emotional purging, and you can hear it on the record."</P><P>In addition to Ke$ha and her contribution, the album will feature 75 other Dylan classics recorded by nearly 80 artists including Adele, Miley Cyrus, "Glee" star Darren Criss, My Chemical Romance, Evan Rachel Wood and Sugarland. The album pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International.</p>

Madge's 12th studio album sells 359,000 copies, giving singer her fifth straight #1.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/madonna/artist.jhtml"><B>Madonna</B></a> will retain her claim to the pop throne next week when her 12th studio album, <a href="/news/articles/1682023/madonna-mdna-album-number-one.jhtml"><I>MDNA,</I></a> debuts at #1 on the <I>Billboard</I> 200 chart. This will be the singer's fifth straight #1 album, and its sales of 359,000 were more than enough to outpace the #2 debut from fellow veteran <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/richie_lionel/artist.jhtml"><B>Lionel Richie</B></a>.</P><P>Richie marks a return to the upper reaches of the charts with his hook-up with <a href="/news/articles/1682061/madonna-lionel-richie-top-billboard.jhtml">country artists on <I>Tuskegee,</I></a> which sold 199,000 copies, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.</P><P><center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:752759/cp~vid%3D752759%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A752759" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center></P><P>With her latest chart-topper, Madonna, 53, joins <B>Barbra Streisand</B> as the only woman to top the <I>Billboard</I> albums chart at least eight times; Streisand holds the record with a total of nine #1 albums.</P><P>Two seasoned rock bands also debut in the top 10, with <B>Shinedown</B> hitting #4 with <I>Amaryllis</I> (106,000) and the <B>Used</B> returning to the charts at #8 with <I>Vulnerable</I> (32,000).</P><P>The rest of the top 10: <B>Adele</B>, <I>21</I> (#3, 121,000), "Hunger Games" soundtrack (#5, 64,000), <B>One Direction</B>, <I>Up All Night</I> (#6, 46,000), the deluxe version of <B>Katy Perry</B>'s <I>Teenage Dream</I> (#7, 33,000), <B>Bruce Springsteen</B>, <I>Wrecking Ball</I> (#9, 28,000) and <I>NOW 41</I> (#10, 25,000).</P><P>The week after they debuted at #3, the <B>Shins</B> drop 11 spots to #14 as business for <I>Port of Morrow</I> dipped by 71 percent to 22,000. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have taken their love affair to Cannes. The small-screen reality siren and the filmmaker/MC made a date night of West's "Cruel Summer" premiere this week in the famed French seaside town, where Kim showed up in a beaded white and gold dress, and Kanye had a more relaxed look , wearing a white blazer with a white T-shirt and jeans.
According to People.com, before the couple entered the premiere, the wind blew through Kardashian's hair and West stopped to fix it for her. Inside the bash, which was held in a tented pyramid, the PDA didn't end. As the screening wrapped, Kim reportedly whispered something in Kanye's ear before joining in a standing ovation for the rapper. They were spotted nuzzling later at the afterparty.
The film premiere was just the latest stop on Kim and Kanye's Tour de Cannes. One night earlier, they hit up Yeezy's "Cruel Summer" fete, and on Tuesday they attended a party thrown by Diddy, E! News reported. The pair turned up at his yacht party hand-in hand, with Kardashian wearing a lacy cropped top and matching high-waisted skirt, and West in a black hoodie, black tee and jeans.
While Kim initially arrived in France solo, West met up with her later. "It's my first time to Cannes and it's amazing!" Kardashian told Usmagazne.com. "I love it here."

Band's halftime performance at Lions' annual Thanksgiving game 'is completely unfair' to the team's fans, online petition says.

<P>It's not exactly breaking news that <a href="/music/artist/nickelback/artist.jhtml">Nickelback</a> tend to elicit a certain level of, uh, <i>acrimony</i> from music fans (perhaps they've never heard <a href="/news/articles/1673594/nickelback-bottoms-up-here-and-now.jhtml">"Bottoms Up"</a>?), but up until now, we thought they were pretty cool with fans of the Detroit Lions.</P><P>Apparently not. Or at least not with Lions backer Dennis Guttman, who has started an online <a href="http://www.change.org/petitions/the-detroit-lions-replace-nickelback-as-the-halftime-show-for-the-thanksgiving-game">petition</a> asking the team to scrap a planned Nickelback performance during halftime of their annual Thanksgiving game — mostly because, for the first time since the Barry Sanders heyday, the Lions are not abysmally awful (they're 6-2), and their Turkey Day tilt against the undefeated, Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers will have the eyes of the nation firmly fixed on the Motor City.</P><P>"This game is nationally televised; do we really want the rest of the U.S. to associate Detroit with Nickelback?" Guttman wrote. "Detroit is home to so many great musicians and they chose Nickelback?!? ... This is completely unfair to those of us who purchased tickets to the game. At least the people watching at home can mute their TVs. The Lions ought to think about their fans before choosing such an awful band to play at halftime."</P><P>To be fair, maybe Aretha Franklin, Bob Seger, Kid Rock, Jack White and/or Ted Nugent passed on the Lions' offer. It's not exactly clear if the team will actually <i>listen</i> to Guttman's plea (a spokesperson for the Lions did not respond to MTV News' request for comment on the matter), though, at press time, more than 35,000 disgruntled fans have signed the petition.</P><P>Reps for Nickelback did not respond to MTV News' emails about the petition, though last week, when the band stopped by the newsroom to talk about their upcoming <a href="/news/articles/1673387/nickelback-bottoms-up-here-and-now.jhtml"><i>Here and Now</i></a> album (before the Thanksgiving performance had been announced), they spoke about ignoring the jabs from their detractors and focusing squarely on servicing the fans that have made them one of the biggest rock acts on the planet — online petitions be damned.</P><P>"When you play a Nickelback show, I mean, there is every range of person that you could possibly imagine on the face of the earth [in the audience], and you couldn't peg one on the street to save your life," frontman Chad Kroeger said. "I think we can all pick out a Slipknot fan, but it's tough to pick out a Nickelback fan, because they're all so different."</P><P><i>What do you think about the anti-Nickelback petition? Second on the list was <b>Barbra Streisand</b>, whose first tour in a dozen years hauled in $92.5 million for 20 shows, with an average ticket price of $298. Country couple <b>Tim McGraw</b> and <b>Faith Hill</b> were #3 with $88.8 million for 73 shows, followed by <b>Madonna</b> with $85.9 million for 34 shows. Last year's sum was $8.99 billion. ...</P><P>Radio broadcaster <b>Entercom Communications</b> has agreed to pay a $4.25 million fine to settle a payola lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, according to <I>Bloomberg News.</i> The suit claimed that the Pennsylvania owner of more than 100 stations paid kickbacks for playing certain songs on its stations. $3.5 million of the settlement will go to Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, which will distribute it to nonprofit New York state companies to help finance musical education and appreciation programs. Entercom did not admit any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.</P><P>12.28.2006</P><P><b>Eminem</b> will host a New Year's Eve countdown Sunday via his Shade 45 channel on Sirius Satellite Radio. The show, which runs from 8-10 p.m. with several replays on Monday, will feature the rapper "stating the facts and playing the tracks," including 25 of his favorite hip-hop songs. "This is not THE definitive top-25 list, because that's just too damn hard! But, these 25 songs are definitely up there as my favorites," Em said in a statement posted on the Shade 45 site. ...</P><P>The Soul Patrol is taking it to the streets. "American Idol" victor <b>Taylor Hicks</b> will hit the road in late February for a run of U.S. gigs in support of his self-titled debut. The trek gets underway February 21 in Jacksonville, Florida. And while Hicks told MTV News earlier this month that the tour would "hopefully last 10 years," so far dates have been scheduled through an April 27 show in Kansas City, Missouri. ...</P><P><b>John Legend</b> will celebrate his 28th birthday Thursday night (December 28) at Stereo in New York. <b>Kanye West</b>, <b>Amerie</b> and <b>Fonzworth Bentley</b> are expected to turn out for the party. ... The lineup for this year's Cornerstone Festival is starting to take shape. The Christian-music-centered fest is scheduled for June 25-30 in Bushnell, Illinois, and will feature <b>Underoath</b>, <b>Switchfoot</b>, <b>Emery</b>, <b>Flyleaf</b>, <b>Anberlin</b>, the <b>Almost</b>, <b>Disciple</b> and <b>Spitfire</b>.</P><P><b>Arcade Fire</b> fans who had planned to download the band's charity single "Intervention" from the iTunes store early Thursday morning ended up with a surprise — two days early — when the track "Black Wave/ Bad Vibrations" was uploaded instead by mistake. "I guess it is sort of charming that we can send the wrong song to the whole world with the click of a mouse," frontman <b>Win Butler</b> said in a post on the band's Web site. Proceeds from this week's sales of "Intervention" (and "Black Wave/ Bad Vibrations") will benefit Partners in Health (PIH.org), an organization supporting community-based initiatives to fight poverty and disease. "Our little bump in the road hasn't changed that," Butler said. ...</P><P>Clearly a lot of people got <b>iTunes</b> gift cards and new iPods for Christmas, because so many of them tried to use the iTunes store over the holiday that there were widespread reports of error messages and download times approaching 20 minutes for a single track. According to an <I>Associated Press</i> report, stressed-out users began posting urgent help messages on Monday and Tuesday on Apple's tech forum for iTunes complaining that they either couldn't log in to the site or were told the system couldn't process their requests for song and video downloads. Apple Computer would not comment on the slowdown, and it was unclear how many people were affected. On her 'loud' personality: ?I am quite loud and bolshie,? she says (British slang for unruly and clamorous). ?I?m a big personality. I walk into a room, big and tall and loud.? Indeed. There is no doubt when Adele is in the building. On her vocal troubles: ?I?ve been singing properly every day since I was about fifteen or sixteen and I have never had any problems with my voice, ever. I?ve had a sore throat here and there, had a cold and sung through it, but that day it just went while I was onstage in Paris during a radio show. It was literally like someone had pulled a curtain over it.? She flew to London the next morning to see her doctor and was diagnosed with acute laryngitis. After a couple weeks? rest, she continued her European tour, came to America, and then her voice went again in May. ?That was a hemorrhage... a burst blood vessel on my vocal cord. That healed, I did a tour, and then it happened again at my best friend?s wedding on October 1.?
On getting support through her surgery from other artists: ?John Mayer had it done at the same time as I did and he really helped me be chilled out about it. Roger Daltrey?s had loads of stuff done; Steven Tyler reached out; Elton John. Lots of artists have had problems with their voices, but you don?t know about it. And they are still singing incredibly well in their 50s and 60s.?

<P>After drawing <a href="/news/articles/1648982/britney-spears-glee-episode-draws-record-setting-ratings.jhtml">record ratings the first time around, "Glee"</a> has announced plans to pay homage to <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> ... one more time. The news comes hot on the heels of the announcement that Spears will join the "X Factor" as judge, when the competition show returns to Fox this fall on Thursday nights. (Glee also moves to Thursdays for season four.)</P><P>While Brit appeared in the September 2010 tribute episode, which used her impressive collection of hits, the 2012 tribute episode will instead focus on her "Glee" namesake, Brittany S. Pierce (played by Heather Morris), without any appearances from Spears. <a href="http://insidetv.ew.com/2012/05/15/glee-scoop-second-britney-tribute-exclusive" target="_blank">EW.com</a> reports that the new episode will be the second in the show's fourth season, returning in the fall.</P><P>The Spears-centric episode will feature eight of her songs, and a source revealed that Fox is excited to have Spears joining the network on "X Factor" and that the "Glee" ep is partly a reflection of that.</P><P>Spears was on hand Monday at the Fox Upfront presentation in New York City, where she appeared alongside fellow <a href="/news/articles/1685057/demi-lovato-britney-spears-x-factor.jhtml">"X Factor" newbie Demi Lovato</a>, as well as returning judges L.A. Reid and Simon Cowell. At the event, the judges and host of "So You Think You Can Dance" weighed in on the <a href="/news/articles/1685066/britney-spears-demi-lovato-x-factor.jhtml">ladies joining the show</a>.</P><P>"I don't have any advice for those ladies," "SYTYCD" host Cat Deeley told MTV News. "What I do like about it though is they will be able to absolutely impart some serious wisdom. I love the idea that they've been in the business for so long and since being kids, and so quite often they've had successes and they've had failures on things.</P><P>"And I think the most important thing is the mistakes we make," she added. "You learn so much from mistakes that you make and I think they'll be able to impart their wisdom to the new kids coming through.
